otum is the data and automation engineering team for companies without one. We build the data platforms, back-office automation, and software companies usually need an in-house team for. Senior engineers scope each system, build it, and stay accountable for it.
We are a senior team, working across the UK and internationally. Teams stay small, everyone works directly with the client, and every build is reviewed by a senior engineer before it reaches them.
We are stack agnostic, which means we bring the right engineer to each job rather than bending every engineer to the same tools. You work in what you are genuinely strong in.
We work remotely, with a few hours of daily overlap for the client calls. Some meetings are fixed and there is the occasional trip to a client site. The rest is flexible, and we make time for learning and for reviewing each other's work.
You own the profit models that tell a client what is actually making them money. You load every sale with its real costs, make the result tie to their accounting, and hand it over as something they own and can run without us. This is the numbers side of otum, the work behind our "numbers you can trust" promise.
You join the data side of otum, working on our Unit Economics and Profit builds. Teams are small and you work directly with the client's finance, ops, and growth people. A senior engineer reviews every build before it reaches the client, and you review others' work in turn.
Build warehouse-native profit models in dbt that load every order and customer with its real variable costs, the cost to make and deliver each sale, the fees, the refunds, and the discounts.
Make the numbers reconcile to the client's accounting, with tie-outs and variance thresholds aligned to their month-end close.
Version the cost and allocation rules, so last quarter's margin stays fixed when this quarter's costs move.
Compute contribution margin, fully-loaded CAC, payback, and net profit at the grain where decisions get made, by channel, customer, and cohort.
Stand up the semantic layer, tests, and lineage so every metric is defined once, refreshed continuously, and pushed back into the tools the client already uses.
Sit with the client's finance and ops people to get the cost assumptions right, and write them down so they can be inspected and changed.
Several years building production analytics in a cloud warehouse such as BigQuery, fluent in SQL and dbt.
A track record of data models that people actually trust, and the modelling discipline behind them.
Experience reconciling a data model to a general ledger, and comfort with financial data like contribution margin, COGS, and CAC.
Hands-on with a semantic or metrics layer, tests, lineage, and incremental refresh.
Able to work directly with finance, ops, and founders, and to explain the assumption behind a number in plain terms.
Remote. You can be based anywhere in the UK or internationally, as long as you keep a few hours of daily overlap with the team and the client. Some client calls are fixed, and there is the occasional trip to a client site.
Numbers you can trust, operations that run themselves, all built into your stack and owned by you. Tell us where you want the edge, and we'll build it.
You'll hear from an engineer the same working day, not a sales sequence.
A short call, then a plan, and we start with Proof Week or a full build.
A fixed fee agreed before anything starts, for Proof Week or the full build.
