ToolsOutside counsel rate check
Did your law firm raise its hourly rates?
Drop your law firm's LEDES invoice files and see which of its lawyers raised their hourly rate on a matter, and what it added to your bills, with every line shown. A calculation from your invoices, not a judgement on whether a raise was allowed.

Added to your bills by raised hourly rates
$26,860.50
From 1 October 2025 to 30 September 2026 your outside counsel billed you $617,768.25 on 42 invoices, and 8 of its lawyers and paralegals raised their hourly rate along the way, which added $26,860.50 to your bills over 1,000.5 hours.
$617,768.25 = the 42 invoice totals added up, each one in the invoices table. $26,860.50 = the 11 raises added up, each one in the table. A raise is a later line on the same matter at a higher hourly rate than the person’s starting rate there, their rate on their first day on that matter in these invoices, the highest if that day has two. What it added is its share of what those lines were billed, so a discount on a line counts.

What this counts
- A raise is a later line on the same matter at a higher hourly rate than the person’s starting rate there, their rate on their first day on that matter in these invoices, the highest if that day has two. What it added is its share of what those lines were billed, so a discount on a line counts.
- A person is the firm’s ID for them in the file, not their name, as the LEDES standard asks. Names and roles are shown as the file writes them.
- A person billing another matter at a different rate is not a raise, because each matter can have its own agreed rate. A rate that only goes up when a new matter opens is not caught.
- The starting rate is the first one in the invoices you dropped. Drop earlier invoices to go further back.
- Only fee lines count. Expenses and invoice-wide adjustments, a discount on a whole invoice among them, are in what the firm billed, never in the rate check.
- An invoice in two files with different lines counts once, from the version with the later invoice date, or the file dropped later when the dates are the same.
- Whether a raise was allowed depends on your agreement with the firm. This is a calculation from your invoices, not a judgement on it.
Also in your files
- 45 expense lines, $25,561.50 in all, in what the firm billed.
- 1 invoice-wide adjustment took $1,008.00 off what the firm billed.
- Discounts on fee lines took $65,912.75 off, shown with each person.
- 78 lines were in more than one file, the same each time, so counted once.
- Invoice 108378 is in 2 files with different lines. The one in the 2nd file, dated 24 Apr 2026, is counted, not the one in the 1st file, dated 10 Apr 2026.
Ask your law firm for the LEDES 1998B file of each invoice, or download it from your e-billing system, then drop them all at once.
